Consultation has concluded
The City of Helena is engaging in a review process for key areas of police operations. The review will enlist the help of community leaders to form work groups. The School Resource Officer Work Group is the second of six being formed.
This working group will support the City Manager’s efforts in responding to the following directive from the City Commission:
July 27, 2020
“…engage in the development of a new MOU to be completed by June 30th, 2021 with Helena Public Schools based in the practices and implementation strategies including but not limited to restorative justice and mental health response models and including stakeholder groups including but not limited to students, families, teachers, Helena Public Schools, health care providers, the Mobile Crisis Response Team, the interdisciplinary child safety team, racial and social justice advocates and the City of Helena.”
As the work group becomes active, additional resources such as meeting summaries and agendas, will be made available. The public is welcome to provide public comment at these meetings. Questions about this process may be directed to the Q&A section below.

Why wasn’t the task force allowed to consider eliminating HPD officers in schools? Schools need trained mental health counselors not cops.
I think the situations where HPD officers are currently used would be best served by trained mental health practitioners.
Will we be able to view the minutes of the May 11 meeting prior to the May 18 meeting?
